Makkah’s Remarkable Transformation: A 600% Surge in Greenery in Just Five Months

This notable increase in vegetation is primarily attributed to substantial rainfall, reaching up to 200 mm in specific areas, transforming the once arid landscapes of Makkah. Leveraging remote sensing data, the Saudi National Center for Vegetation Cover Development initially identified a vegetation area of 3,529.4 square kilometers in August, constituting 2.3% of the region’s total area. However, following the monsoon season, this green expanse underwent a significant expansion.
By December 2023, the vegetated area had grown to cover 17.1% of the Makkah region, predominantly in the mountainous zones along the Red Sea coast. This expansion included areas such as Makkah, Taif, Al Layth, Al Jum, Al Kamal, and Khula, situated at altitudes ranging from 500 to 2600 meters.
The National Center conducts extensive studies on vegetation cover, utilizing advanced remote sensing and artificial intelligence technologies. These cutting-edge tools enable precise monitoring of land cover changes, evaluation of rainfall levels, and assessment of plant health. These initiatives align with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and broader plantation projects.

The substantial increase in greenery not only reflects the success of Saudi Arabia’s endeavors but also underscores the nation’s dedication to environmental preservation and the promotion of sustainability.
This significant rise in vegetation cover serves as evidence of the positive impact of strategic conservation and reforestation measures, highlighting the country’s steadfast commitment to combating desertification and nurturing its natural landscapes.
