Khyber Medical University (KMU) to Establish Nursing Institutes in Underserved Districts of Malakand Division
In a strategic decision driven by the need to address the lack of healthcare facilities in underprivileged regions, Khyber Medical University (KMU) in Peshawar has resolved to establish nursing institutes in the districts of Lower Chitral, Upper Chitral, and Upper Dir within the Malakand Division.
The decision was made during a meeting presided over by KMU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Ziaul Haq, who recognized the pressing need for improved healthcare services in these areas.

In attendance at the meeting were KMU Registrar Inam Ullah Khan Wazir and a delegation from the Chitral Nursing Forum, led by Chairperson Jafaryad Hussain and President Nasir Ali. The delegation underscored the significant underdevelopment in Lower Chitral, Upper Chitral, and Upper Dir, emphasizing the dire lack of educational and healthcare infrastructure, which has hindered higher education opportunities for local students.
The members of the delegation stressed the noble role of nurses in serving humanity and highlighted the interest of educated youth in Chitral, particularly women, in pursuing nursing careers. They expressed the belief that providing nursing education within their communities would not only benefit the nursing profession but also open doors for the youth of these districts.

Professor Dr. Ziaul Haq offered his assurance that KMU would mobilize its resources to fulfill this demand. He noted KMU’s establishment of sub-campuses in eight districts over the past three years and confirmed that nursing institutes would be established in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, and Upper Dir once suitable locations were identified. Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing the shortage of nurses in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and pledged to take further necessary measures in this regard.
