Historic Memorabilia Breaks Records at Auction
A gold pocket watch presented to Captain Arthur Rostron of RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued 700 Titanic survivors, has set a record by selling for £1.56 million (around ₱115 million). The 18-carat Tiffany & Co. watch was a token of gratitude from Madeleine Astor, widow of Titanic’s richest casualty John Jacob Astor, and two other widows of wealthy businessmen who perished in the tragedy. Inscribed with the date of the disaster, April 15, 1912, and the names of the widows, the watch symbolizes the heroism of Captain Rostron, who acted swiftly in the aftermath of the iceberg collision.

The watch, auctioned on November 16 by Henry Aldridge & Son, was purchased by a U.S. collector, becoming the most expensive Titanic artifact ever sold. The auction also featured John Jacob Astor’s pocket watch, worn during the tragedy, which fetched nearly £1.15 million (around ₱87 million). Auctioneer Henry Aldridge highlighted how the enduring fascination with Titanic’s legacy and dwindling artifact supply have driven high demand and record prices.

Captain Rostron, celebrated for his bravery, was also awarded the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor for a non-U.S. citizen, by President William Howard Taft.
