Ethiopia’s £5 Billion Mega Airport City to Become Africa’s Largest and Busiest Airport

Ethiopia is building a £5 billion “Mega Airport City” set to be Africa’s largest airport and one of the busiest globally. Located near Bishoftu, 25 miles from Addis Ababa, the airport will handle up to 110 million passengers annually upon its completion in 2029. The project, spearheaded by Ethiopian Airlines in collaboration with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, will feature a state-of-the-art terminal and four runways.

The new facility aims to relieve congestion at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, which currently operates at capacity. The Mega Airport City is expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a global aviation hub, boosting its economy and enhancing international business and tourism. Designed to rival major global airports such as Dubai and Heathrow, it will serve as a cornerstone for the country’s growing influence on the world stage.
