The situation surrounding the detention of several former Indian Navy officers in Qatar raises questions. The Indian government, through an official statement, has emphasized the significance of the case and the gravity of the death penalty verdict. They are determined to “address the matter with the Qatari authorities.”
According to local Indian media outlets, all the convicted Indian nationals were employed by a private company in Qatar. They were arrested in August the previous year on charges of espionage. It’s important to note that the news agency Reuters has not independently verified these allegations of espionage made by the Indian media.
Reuters reported that the individuals who received these sentences were all former officers of the Indian Navy, and the specifics of the charges against them have not been made public by either the Qatari or Indian authorities. Despite attempts to contact the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, no response was received.
