Chitral Valleys Reopen for Traffic After Snow Clearance Efforts
Chitral, major efforts have led to the reopening of roads in various valleys
Following a significant snowfall event in Chitral, major efforts have led to the reopening of roads in various valleys, including Bomburat, Rambur, Ursun, Sheshi Koh, Janjirit Koh, and Beuri, which had been previously shut down to all vehicular movement. The snow removal operations were spearheaded by the National Highway Authority (NHA) contractors who successfully cleared the main highway from Peshawar to Chitral and the internal roads of Chitral bazaar. Meanwhile, the Communication and Works (C&W) Department has been focusing on clearing snow from other affected valleys.

Under the guidance of Executive Engineer of the C&W Department, Tariq Murtaza, and SDO Drosh, Waqar Khan, Drosh Construction Company’s contractor Haider Ali made significant progress by clearing the paths from Bomburit Valley to Anish, the Rambur road to Pondak, and the Sheshikoh road to Patigal. Despite facing challenges such as continuous landslides, glacier movements, and large rock obstructions on the Sheshikoh road, the team persisted in their efforts.
Dedicated to restoring access, C&W officials and workers tirelessly worked to ensure that the roads to Ursun Valley, Jangerit Koh, and Beuri were made passable for traffic. The local community noted that while the Kailash valley roads are under the jurisdiction of the National Highway Authority, it is the C&W Department that has undertaken their snow clearance. Certain areas, including Garm Chashma, Karimabad, Sosum, and Madagalsht, remain inaccessible, but continuous work by C&W missionaries promises to reopen these routes soon, alleviating local transportation issues.

An anonymous C&W Department official highlighted the financial struggles faced by the department, revealing that they have yet to receive the Maintenance & Repair (M&R) fund allocated for the previous year, forcing them to rely on personal relationships with contractors to continue their crucial work.
