From Motorcycles to SUVs: GWM’s Bold New V8 Defies Industry’s EV Shift
Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) has unveiled a powerful new bi-turbo V8 engine at the Shanghai Auto Show, signaling its ambition to compete with Western luxury brands. The 4.0-liter, all-aluminum engine features a “hot-vee” turbo configuration—where the turbos sit inside the V-angle—to reduce lag and improve packaging. While GWM has not yet disclosed exact power figures, the engine is designed primarily for plug-in hybrid applications, blending electric efficiency with high-performance combustion power.

GWM’s Hybrid V8 Engine Challenges Western Luxury Brands at Shanghai Auto Show
This move comes as major automakers like Ford, Mercedes, and Ferrari scale back V8 offerings in favor of electrification. Yet GWM, better known for its SUVs and recent foray into high-displacement motorcycles, is doubling down on big internal combustion engines. Last year, the company shocked the industry with an eight-cylinder motorcycle, the Souo S2000, proving its engineering prowess in unconventional powertrains.

The new V8 is expected to debut in GWM’s upcoming luxury sub-brand, Confidence, as well as in rugged Tank SUVs like the Tank 700. However, the hybrid setup means the V8 will likely serve as a performance booster rather than running continuously—activating mainly during heavy acceleration, towing, or high-demand scenarios. Enthusiasts hope for customizable drive modes to maximize the V8’s roar.
While GWM champions this engine as a “masterpiece of Chinese engineering,” its long-term role remains uncertain in an auto industry rapidly pivoting toward full electrification. Still, the bold move highlights China’s growing capability in high-performance automotive technology, challenging traditional luxury automakers on their own turf—with a surprising V8 revival.
