In a landmark diplomatic development, Pakistan has agreed to engage in discussions with Bangladesh regarding a formal apology for the 1971 genocide and the restitution of pre-independence assets valued at $4.2 billion. This breakthrough emerged following secretary-level talks held in Dhaka on April 17.
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Jasim Uddin announced that Pakistan has shown willingness to address longstanding grievances and unresolved humanitarian issues. “We now see a constructive approach to move forward on these sensitive matters,” Jasim revealed, adding that Bangladesh’s demands for asset recovery and a formal apology for the 1971 atrocities were clearly communicated.

The plight of 325,000 stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh since the Liberation War also featured in the talks, with both nations expressing a commitment to resolving repatriation challenges. In addition to historical concerns, the discussions highlighted shared goals to strengthen economic and trade ties, including plans to establish direct flights between Dhaka and Islamabad, marking an effort to foster greater regional connectivity.
