Astore, Gilgit-Baltistan – Tragic Bus Accident Claims 26 Lives in Astore; Bride Sole Survivor
In a heartbreaking incident, 26 people lost their lives when a passenger bus carrying wedding guests from Astore, Gilgit-Baltistan, to Chakwal veered off the Thalichi Bridge and fell into a river. The bus, carrying a total of 27 passengers, left only the bride, Malaika, as the sole survivor. She sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital, while intensive rescue operations are underway with support from local residents, rescue teams, and police.

Deputy Commissioner of Astore, Muhammad Tariq, reported that 14 bodies have been recovered so far and transferred to the Astore District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital. He confirmed that the accident-damaged vehicle was also retrieved from the river. Commenting on the incident, Home Minister Shams Lone revealed that initial investigations indicate a potential loss of control due to the slippery conditions on Thalichi Bridge. Authorities are exploring all possible causes, including a mechanical failure that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Due to nightfall, the rescue operation was temporarily suspended but is set to resume in the morning to locate any remaining victims.
