80-Year-Old Scholar Earns PhD on FM Radio’s Impact in Karachi
Saeed Masood Usmani: A Journey of Resilience and Academic Excellence

The Graduate Research Management Council of Federal Urdu University Karachi, in its 66th meeting, awarded a PhD degree to Saeed Masood Usmani from the Department of Mass Communication. His thesis, titled “Popularity of FM Radio Broadcasting in Karachi: An Analytical Study of Audience,” was completed under the guidance of Professor Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan, a prominent figure in journalism, academia, and literature.
Despite facing immense personal challenges, including four heart attacks and a stroke, Dr. Usmani persevered and achieved his PhD at the remarkable age of 80. Known for his insatiable passion for reading, he is often referred to as a living encyclopedia.
His research delves into the social and cultural impact of FM radio in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city. The study is notable for its inclusivity, incorporating feedback from 2,500 men, 2,226 women, and 400 transgender individuals from various districts of Karachi, making it a groundbreaking contribution to the field.
Dr. Usmani’s life is also marked by political activism and participation in protest movements, adding depth to his inspiring journey.
