A Dhaka court has ordered three Chinese nationals to be sent to jail after they were arrested with 363 iPhones during raids in Khilkhet and Uttara. Police Seize 363 iPhones in Khilkhet, Uttara Raids; Court Orders Jail
According to the Khilkhet police case, acting on a tip-off, police raided the Nikunja area on January 7 around 4:45 pm. Wu Jun and Dong Hongwei were arrested while preparing to sell smuggled phones. A search recovered 305 iPhones worth approximately Tk 6.04 million. Investigators said the phones had been brought from China by evading taxes and duties.
In another case filed with Uttara West police, detectives raided Sector 13 in Uttara and arrested Tanzian from his rented apartment. A total of 58 iPhones were seized. Preliminary investigations revealed that the three accused were working together to smuggle phones from China into Bangladesh.
Investigators argued in court that since the accused are foreign nationals, releasing them on bail could disrupt the investigation and trial, and they might flee. The court agreed to keep them in jail until the investigation concludes.
Earlier on Thursday morning, Dhaka Metropolitan Police conducted raids in Uttara and Nikunja, arresting the trio and seizing 363 iPhones, a large quantity of spare parts, and eight bottles of foreign liquor. The seized items are valued at approximately Tk 17.5 million. Investigations are ongoing.
Deputy Commissioner Mahiuddin Mahmud Sohel stated that the smuggling ring has deep roots, involving not only these three Chinese nationals but also dishonest local mobile traders. He urged customers to remain cautious when buying expensive phones, warning that purchasing from unauthorized shops carries a high risk of fraud.
