Sindh Still Stuck on ‘E’ Signal as Parliamentarians Demand PTA Action
A stormy session of the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT saw lawmakers strongly criticize the poor state of mobile and internet services across Pakistan.
Mahesh Kumar Malani highlighted that nearly 75% of Sindh still receives only an ‘E’ signal instead of 4G. Sadiq Ali Memon added that internet performance in Islamabad and Thatta has been deteriorating steadily. PPP MNA Sharmila Faruqi expressed frustration over unsatisfactory service nationwide, noting frequent shutdowns in some areas due to security concerns. She lamented that despite repeated complaints, no Interior Ministry representative has ever attended committee meetings.

Engineer Rana Atique echoed these concerns, saying he cannot even make a call while driving on Lahore Ring Road. “If Lahore and Karachi face such problems, imagine the rest of the country. My constituents ask what we are even doing here,” he said. Committee member Paveen Baloch added that her region has been neglected for years, with no internet access and no official visits despite repeated requests.

PTA officials responded that tower placement is determined by mobile operators based on commercial needs, while PTA ensures compliance and conducts service quality surveys. They claimed action is taken whenever complaints are filed. However, lawmakers remained unconvinced, insisting that service has not improved despite years of monitoring. The committee demanded PTA appoint dedicated focal persons to handle parliamentary complaints, a proposal PTA agreed to implement.
