Tragedy in Dhaka: Military Jet Crash Claims Lives of Children and Civilians, Sparks National Outcry
A Bangladesh Air Force training jet, identified as the F-7 BGI, crashed into a school and college campus in the densely populated Uttara area of Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 50. The crash occurred shortly after the aircraft took off at 1:06 p.m., according to the military’s Inter-Services Public Relations department. Flames and thick black smoke were seen rising from the crash site as emergency crews rushed to rescue victims from the debris.
Among the dead and injured were several schoolchildren, with one third-grade student pronounced dead on arrival at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Three others — including a 12-year-old and 14-year-old — were admitted with critical burn injuries. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and devastation as parents searched for their children, teachers tried to help the wounded, and firefighters battled the raging blaze. A teacher present during the incident recalled hearing an explosion and turning to see only “fire and smoke.”
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Interim Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus has pledged a full inquiry and assured complete government support for the victims and their families. He acknowledged the immense loss suffered by the Air Force and the local community, calling it “irreparable.” This tragedy follows another deadly crash just weeks ago in India, raising renewed concerns about aviation safety in the region.
