Chitral’s Reshun Area Faces Severe Flood Threat as River Erodes Forests and Farmlands
In Chitral, the river’s fury has reached alarming levels at Reshun, Raghain, where water levels have risen dangerously high. As a result, large swathes of nearby forestland have been submerged, and the protective embankment built to prevent erosion has also given way at one point. This collapse has accelerated the erosion around the villages of Raghain and Ariyan, putting homes, farmlands, and infrastructure at risk.
The rapid loss of land to the river has forced locals to cut down trees in a desperate attempt to salvage what remains before the rising waters claim it. Residents fear that if the Chitral River’s flow continues to surge at this pace, entire villages including Reshun, Raghain, and Ariyan could be consumed by the river.
Locals blame government indifference and the incompetence of elected representatives for the worsening situation. Already, vast areas of fertile land and valuable forests have been lost to the river, and whatever remains is now under severe threat due to the lack of timely intervention and flood protection measures.
