Sindh Govt Backs Boxing Prodigy Aliya Soomro with Rs4.7m for Historic India-Pakistan Clash in Dubai
The Sindh government has pledged Rs4.7 million to support teenage boxing champion Aliya Soomro for her upcoming international tournament in Dubai this August, where she is set to compete against an Indian opponent. The 19-year-old athlete, overwhelmed by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah’s sponsorship, called it a “dream come true.” While the identity of her Indian rival remains undisclosed, Soomro confirmed she will learn her opponent’s name a week before the match.

Hailing from Lyari—a neighborhood known for its passion for sports—Soomro has become a symbol of resilience for aspiring female athletes. Her journey is deeply personal: her father, a daily wage laborer and former aspiring footballer, instilled in her the determination to succeed. Earlier this year, she made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a world boxing title, defeating Thailand’s Sothida Gunya Noch in just 45 seconds at the WBA Asia 105-pound category in Bangkok. Her victories, she says, are dedicated to “girls dreaming big in Pakistan’s streets.”

The Sindh government has consistently recognized her achievements. After her world title win, CM Shah honored her with a Rs1 million cash reward and a traditional Sindhi Ajrak at a special ceremony. UNICEF also celebrated her as an “extraordinarily talented” athlete, while the Sindh Assembly passed a resolution praising her accomplishments. As she prepares for her next challenge, CM Shah reaffirmed the province’s commitment to nurturing women athletes, calling Soomro a “dynamic daughter of Sindh” ready to conquer global stages.
