The flight, arriving from Minneapolis, attempted to land around 2:15 p.m. amid strong winds and blowing snow. Despite normal communication between the control tower and pilots before landing, the aircraft—a Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR—somehow overturned upon touchdown.

Passenger Peter Carlson described the landing as “very forceful,” stating that within seconds, the plane went sideways and flipped upside down. Video footage shared on social media showed the overturned fuselage, while emergency responders worked to extinguish a fire and assist passengers evacuating the aircraft.

Toronto Pearson Fire Chief Todd Aitken confirmed that 18 people were taken to hospitals, including one child transported to SickKids Hospital. Delta CEO Ed Bastian issued a statement expressing concern and support for those affected, while Toronto airport officials assured the public that emergency response protocols had been followed efficiently.

Despite gusts reaching 40 mph (65 kph), authorities reported that runway conditions were dry, and no crosswind issues were present at the time of landing. The cause of the crash remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
