Assad Regime Falls as Rebels Seize Control of Damascus
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year rule ended as rebel forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured Damascus. Declaring the city “free of Assad,” HTS claimed a swift military victory. Thousands of Syrians took to the streets, chanting “Freedom” and celebrating the fall of Assad’s authoritarian regime.
Reports suggest Assad fled Damascus earlier in the day, with senior military officials confirming his departure through Damascus International Airport, though his destination remains unknown. In addition, HTS claimed control of the strategic city of Homs, breaking the Assad regime’s hold over Syria’s central region.
In a televised statement, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed willingness to cooperate with any new leadership chosen by the Syrian people. He voiced hope for a stable Syria with improved international relations, signaling potential for a political transition in the country.
