A new study has found that women who have sex less than once a week are more likely to die early compared to those who engage in frequent sexual activity. The survey, involving 2,267 participants in the US, highlighted the importance of sexual activity for overall health and longevity. The researchers examined data from a national health survey and discovered a significant link between low sexual frequency and higher mortality rates in women.
According to the study published in the Journal of Psychosexual Health, 94.4% of the surveyed individuals reported having sex at least once a month, while 38.4% had sex more than once a week. The findings suggest that regular sexual activity contributes to cardiovascular health by reducing heart rate variability and increasing blood flow. Women who had sex less frequently were 1.7 times more likely to have died from any cause by the end of 2015 compared to their more sexually active counterparts.
Interestingly, while the study did not find the same correlation in men, it did reveal that sexual activity had a mitigating effect on depression for both sexes. Individuals with depression who engaged in frequent sex experienced fewer harmful effects from depression and had lower mortality rates. Dr. Srikanta Banerjee, the lead author of the study, noted that sex releases endorphins which may help prevent severe health outcomes.
The researchers concluded that maintaining a healthy sexual life is crucial for overall well-being, particularly for women. They emphasized that sexual activity not only enhances cardiovascular health but also helps mitigate the negative impacts of depression, ultimately contributing to a longer life.
