Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and Bilal Afzal remain part of the seven-member panel
Following the national team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq have reportedly been removed from the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee, according to Geo News. Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and Bilal Afzal remain part of the seven-member panel, which also includes the captain and head coach. Sources indicate that the PCB management had lost confidence in Riaz and Razzaq, and their opinions had been disregarded for some time, particularly regarding the selection of players for the World Cup squad.

The PCB had restructured the men’s national selection committee in March to promote transparency, but the team selected by the panel underperformed in all subsequent series. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has announced a “major surgery” to improve the team’s performance and has begun consultations to formulate a comprehensive plan to enhance the batting, bowling, and fielding of the Pakistan cricket team. He chaired two important meetings on Tuesday, one with white-ball coach Gary Kirsten and red-ball coach Jason Gillespie, and another with over two dozen former and current players.
The meetings discussed the future of cricket in Pakistan, starting with a presentation by Naqvi titled “Pathway to Pakistan Cricket,” which outlined the steps a cricketer takes to reach the national team. Attendees included key PCB officials and notable cricket figures such as Abdur Rauf, Aamer Malik, Asim Kamal, Azhar Khan, and others. The focus was on addressing the shortcomings of the team and ensuring a better selection process moving forward.

The removal of Riaz and Razzaq underscores the PCB’s commitment to revamping the team’s structure and performance. The board aims to regain trust and improve results by implementing strategic changes and involving experienced cricket personalities in decision-making processes. The outcomes of these consultations and the subsequent changes will be crucial for the future success of Pakistan cricket.
