Two Christian families were rescued from an enraged mob that attacked their homes in Sargodha’s Mujahid Colony on Saturday morning. The incident, stemming from alleged desecration, led to the arrest of at least 15 men. Sargodha District Police Officer (DPO) Asad Ejaz Malhi reported that a large police contingent was deployed, and no fatalities were recorded. The police safely evacuated the residents and dispersed the crowd peacefully.
Social media footage depicted violent scenes, but DPO Malhi dismissed the videos as fake, claiming no one was injured. However, a relative of an injured person contradicted this, stating his uncle was in critical condition at a hospital. A statement from Minority Rights March indicated the attack on a 70-year-old man and the destruction of his home and factory were instigated by a local cleric. Punjab police officials, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar, responded promptly, saving lives and controlling the situation.
The situation in Sargodha has been declared peaceful and under control, with over 2,000 police officers on duty. The police praised the district peace committee and the Christian community for helping restore calm. Further arrests are expected as investigations continue. Punjab Home Affairs Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal has been instructed to thoroughly investigate the incident, ensuring no injustice under the guise of religion.
