The bustling city of Karachi took an undesirable lead as the ‘most polluted’ city globally in terms of air quality, as reported by the Air Quality Index (AQI) monitored by Swiss company IQAir. However, the situation underwent a dynamic shift by 10 pm when Lahore surpassed Karachi, relegating the latter to the fourth position in the AQI rankings.
Meteorologists are forecasting a continuation of the “very unhealthy” pollution levels for another day or two, posing significant health risks to the residents. Health experts have issued warnings, emphasizing the potential for various infections under such weather conditions and advising people to minimize exposure to the compromised atmosphere.
The Pak Weather Network, a private weather forecasting and broadcasting source, has actively shared real-time updates on its social media platform. The air quality, measured on the AQI scale, ranged between 391 and 250 by sunset, indicating a severe pollution scenario.
Syed Owais Haider from Pak Weather Network expressed a grim outlook, stating, “We don’t see any chance that the situation will improve to a large extent until a good western rainy system intervenes.”
Experts attribute the current adverse weather conditions to a shift in wind direction. Despite the unhealthy air quality, they assert that it is not an unprecedented or abnormal phenomenon, instilling a degree of confidence in managing the situation.

As Karachi and Lahore grapple with the impact of escalating pollution levels, residents are urged to stay informed about air quality updates, adhere to health guidelines, and take precautionary measures to mitigate potential health risks associated with the ongoing atmospheric challenges. The cities remain vigilant as they await conducive weather changes to alleviate the existing pollution concerns.
